Know Your WHY – A Power Tool

An eyeglass screwdriver has a single purpose. It’s so delicate that if you use it for a job bigger than turning the tiny little screw in a pair of eyeglasses, you could easily destroy it. On the other hand, you can use a hammer to repair a hinge or set a stake. It’s so versatile that you can use it to build a box or a skyscraper. The screwdriver and the hammer affect our outer world. We use inner world tools as well. An apology is an example of an inner world tool that affects our outer world. It can bring a tear, a smile or a hug. It can restore a relationship, so two people who were estranged do things together again.

In this blog, we’ll explore the power of “knowing your WHY,” an inner tool with big impact. Knowing your WHY requires self-awareness. It’s an expression of your authentic voice. Your WHY is how you’re wired. It’s what you’re passionate about. It inspires you. It’s the root pattern of your actions. When you know your WHY, you understand yourself and it makes it easier for others to “get you”. They feel your authenticity. It helps establish and nurture relationships and facilitates building “know, like and trust”.

Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why, popularized this tool. During a time in his life when he had a good job, interesting clients and a life that looked awesome from the outside, he found himself in a very dark place. He had a hard time getting up in the morning. He’d lost his mojo. Instead of staying stuck, he asked questions. He did research, and he discovered that people and organizations who were successful over the long term did many things similar to others. They just did it in reverse order. Instead of starting with WHAT they did, they started with WHY they did it. They found deeper meaning and stayed connected to their passion over the long haul. Inspired by their WHY, they inspired those around them. It was easier to form relationships and get stuff done. Simon applied what he learned in his life, and rediscovered his mojo – but it was better than ever, and his friends wanted to know what he was doing. So he helped them discover their WHY. They got excited and told others. Soon, Simon’s calendar was filled with invitations to help people discover their WHY. He was onto something.

Knowing your WHY is a tool that brings clarity. You understand the people in your life and they understand you. You communicate better. As a business owner, knowing your WHY helps you make better hiring decisions. It’s easier to build the culture in your business. You can express your brand so the world “sees” you and your business. This inner tool has many practical, outer applications that facilitate both happiness and profitability.

Angie is a photographer with a 2018 vision to significantly grow her business. She wanted a powerful and succinct message to attract new clients. I guided her through my “Message to Market” coaching process. First, we discovered her WHY. Her eyes sparkled with recognition the moment we named it. We developed a draft of her WHY-HOW-WHAT message, a statement she’ll use in countless ways to attract clients who are a perfect fit for the experience and images she delivers. We developed her tag line. “When trust is present, magic happens.” Over the next 30 days, she used her message in conversations and refined it based on feedback. Once she felt her message was truly authentic, she hired a videographer to capture her WHY-HOW-WHAT message.

Whether you use the “know your WHY” tool for marketing, hiring, team building or to better understand your family, this tool uses what’s on the inside, so you can have a profound impact your world on the outside.
